I started Uzazi Hub in 2022 because I had been a working mother in Kampala and knew how much of the load is carried quietly. Three years and 2,000+ mothers later, the pattern was clear, and it wasn't the one I had built for. Mothers weren't struggling to find the right products or the right doula. They were struggling to pay for them, at the exact moment their income stopped. Then I found the thing that turned a frustration into a business. Every maternity policy in Uganda and Kenya carries a nine to twelve month waiting period, against a nine-month pregnancy. The moment a woman knows she needs cover is the moment she can no longer buy it. So she borrows, or she keeps cash at home where rent finds it first. The money usually exists somewhere around her: a husband, a mother, an employer, a sister abroad. It just never arrives as care. That is what we are building now: the Uzazi Wallet, a maternal-care account she opens the day she tests positive, that everyone around her can pay into, held against care until she needs it.
