John Beck is the Founder and CEO of Virtual Bible Study and the creator of VBS+, an online Christian community designed to help believers connect, learn, and put their faith into action.
A Bible study teacher for 30 years, John has dedicated much of his life to helping people explore Scripture and apply Biblical teachings to their everyday lives.
In 2018, John founded Virtual Bible Study, a digital Bible study platform that has organically reached more than 500,000 people around the world without paid advertising.
After years of teaching Bible study and observing how people engage with Scripture online, John began to see an opportunity.
Technology had made Christian content more accessible than ever. People could watch sermons, read devotionals, and listen to Christian podcasts from virtually anywhere.
But John believed something was still missing.
Faith was never meant to be passive. It's not something you watch, read, or listen to. It's something you live.
That belief led John to create VBS+.
Built around the principles of Connect. Learn. Act., VBS+ is being designed to combine professionally produced Bible-study content with trusted, meaningful Christian community—bringing people together not simply to study Scripture, but to build relationships and put their faith into action.
A central focus of John's work is now understanding the science behind forming successful online small groups—how behavioral science, psychology, group dynamics, and data can help bring the right people together and create the conditions for trust, participation, meaningful relationships, long-term engagement, and retention.
Through VBS Match™, VBS+ plans to form curated Bible-study groups of approximately 10–15 adults. Rather than simply matching people who are available at the same time, VBS+ wants to understand what combination of member preferences, characteristics, and behavioral signals can increase the probability that group members participate consistently, feel heard and respected, develop trust, form meaningful relationships, and remain engaged with their group and VBS+ over time. VBS+ also wants to determine, through research and data, the optimal group size within that range.
This raises questions fundamental to successful group formation: When does similarity improve group chemistry, and when does diversity or complementarity make a group stronger? What creates balanced participation and helps people feel heard? What conditions foster trust and psychological safety? Which early signals predict group cohesion, meaningful relationship formation, long-term engagement, and retention? And how can actual group outcomes be used to continuously improve future matching?
John believes that developing an evidence-based approach to group formation and relationship development could become an important strategic differentiator for VBS+. He is seeking expertise from specialists in behavioral science, psychology, group dynamics, psychometrics, social science, and data-driven group formation to challenge VBS+'s assumptions, identify the factors that matter most, and help translate the science into a practical approach that can be tested, measured, and continuously improved.
Once matched, members study together through a structured experience designed to provide consistency from group to group while preserving what makes a great Bible study human: meaningful conversation, different perspectives, personal experiences, and fellowship. Each study combines John's professionally produced Bible lesson with five approved discussion questions and a structured facilitation model designed to help members participate, feel heard, and build relationships over time.
Learning then leads to action.
Through the Library of Good Deeds™ (LOGD), members are encouraged to put their faith into practice by serving others. These acts of service will most often be completed individually, but members can bring their experiences back to the group for optional reflection and sharing—creating opportunities to encourage and inspire one another to put their own faith into action.
Together, these elements create a reinforcing cycle:
CONNECT → LEARN → ACT → CONNECT
VBS+ is designed not simply to form study groups, but to create the conditions in which meaningful Christian relationships can develop and deepen over time.
While community is central to the VBS+ vision, members who prefer to study independently can choose a solo experience and progress through the same VBS+ curriculum at their own pace, with the same emphasis on learning Scripture and putting their faith into action.
John is a graduate of the Founder Institute and Founder Institute Funding Lab and brings more than 25 years of leadership experience with Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover. Throughout his career, he has led teams, worked across complex organizations, driven growth, and focused extensively on customer experience, relationship development, and building high-performing teams.
Recognizing that group formation and group dynamics are becoming core competencies for VBS+, John is also developing his own expertise in the field and has enrolled in Villanova University's Building & Leading Highly Effective Teams program.
Today, John speaks about digital discipleship, faith and technology, building meaningful Christian community, engaging the next generation in Scripture, and the importance of moving faith from something we consume to something we live.
His message is simple:
Faith is something you live.
